Westcoast/AOR Music

Hello,everybody--two unrelated subjects here--first off, does anyone know who played rhodes on Bishop's "Losing Myself In You"--I've narrowed it down to three guys--Bill Payne,John Jarvis,or David Foster. My money'd be on Foster, but I just can't be 100%--which annoys me a bit, since I pride myself on identifying distinctive keyboard styles.lol...Now about China--this is a decent piece of Westcoast that I never hear anyone talk about--granted,it was recorded here in Canada, but Jeff Baxter produced it,and Jay Graydon helped to shape the arrangements.Came out in '81,and produced a hit,a ballad titled "You Can't Treat Love That Way"--there were a coupla other tunes that I liked.I've never seen it for sale, and I suspect it hasn't been re-issued,but I don't know--that's why I'm throwing it out there to you guys.I did find a youtube video with "You Can't Treat Love That Way",and that's about it.They sounded a lot like Sneaker, for obvious reasons, but I never felt they were as good writing-wise.Anyhow,anyone with any answers or insights, feel free to lay 'em on me.Ciao & God bless.

Knew I could count on you--there were only a couple of cuts that I liked off of it--Can't Treat Love That Way & There Was A Time(which has more Michael McDonald influence than maybe any Westcoast tune I've heard).Btw,Florent,I'd like to hit you up for another couple of tunes,if possible--they're Steve Kipner's "Ending",and "School Of Broken Hearts"--I've got "School",but it's recorded from vinyl and sounds like crap--the volume changes about 8 times throughout the tune(lol).Anyhow, thanks in advance and we'll talk soon.Cheers & God bless.

China…some insight about what the members have done, before getting involved in this one is already brought by Takeshi Ito & Toshikazu Kanazawa , I would only like to add that this record is full of paradoxes.

It was produced by legendary Bob Johnston (Dylan) who is to be considered as a very odd choice, considering his merits and makes you think that Jay Graydon ’s role as “creative arranging consultant” was pretty extensive, although he doesn’t have any recollection regarding this project, as it’s “hard” to believe that Bill King and Danny McBride, credited here, could’ve built these arrangements on their own.

There are three exceptional guitar players.. Ritenour,, Baxter, Albert Lee, besides Bernie Labarge, but they only do rhythm guitars, while all the leads are deleciously done by Danny McBride…Graydon isn’t playing on this one. McBride has an extensive merit list- played guitar for Chris de Burgh for 14 years and is considered one of Canadas best kept secrets. “He had a high school band with David Cronenberg on sax”.

Neither Chris Kearney, Bill King or Danny Mcbride are credited as harmony singers on any other artist’s album, still on this one they deliver some outstanding harmonies, on par with those of McDonald /Holland, which together with an songwriting so reminiscent of the eighties westcoast sound, makes this album essential… westcoast confidential.

The CD can still be purchased at Amazon Japan:

Very cool background info,Florent--good research.I would never guess in a thousand years that David Cronenberg could play sax--I'm sure he's a much better filmmaker than saxophonist--I can't even imagine the guy playing anything--he could pass as a surgeon or an architect maybe, but not a musician.Did you know that Steely Dan's first drummer was Chevy Chase?Obviously,Chase never recorded with them--just played a few bars and campus gigs.ttyl
