Dan's wife, Catherine, found him dead on Sunday in bed in his home in Missouri, south west of St Louis, his father Milton Peek said.
The cause of death was not known, and a post-mortem examination is planned. Dan Peek suffered from arthritis, but it is not known if that was a contributing factor.
Dan, whose father was in the US Air Force, had met the two other members of America - Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley - while attending college in London.
After signing a record contract, America were an almost instant sensation with songs featuring tight harmonies over catchy tunes.
All told, America had three platinum and three gold albums, along with eight Top 40 hits, from 1971 through to 1975.
"It was a joyous time for the three of us, full of excitement and laughter," Bunnell wrote on the band's website after learning of Peek's death. "We created lasting music together and experienced a life that we could never have imagined."
The group's first album in 1971 included the number one hit Horse With No Name.
Other hits followed - Tin Man, Sister Golden Hair, and Daisy Jane, among them. Dan played lead guitar on many of the songs, and wrote some of them, including the 1974 hit Lonely People.
"Dan & his music will live on in the great songs he shared with us all," Beckley wrote on the group's website.

The renowned rock guitarist Gary Moore has died, the BBC has learned.
Mr Moore, 58, was, originally from Belfast, and was a former member of the legendary Irish group Thin Lizzy.
Adam Parsons, who manages Thin Lizzy, told the BBC that Mr Moore had died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Mr Moore was originally drafted into Thin Lizzy by its singer Phil Lynott. He later gained acclaim for his solo work and was a former member of the Irish group Skid Row.
Gerry Rafferty, who has died after a long illness
The singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, whose songs such as Stuck in the Middle with You, Baker Street and Get it Right Next Time soundtracked the 1970s, has died aged 63 after a long illness.
His family said he died at home peacefully with his daughter Martha this morning.
The Scot was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, played with Billy Connolly's folk outfit the Humblebums, and co-founded the soft-rock group Stealer's Wheel, before enjoying a successful solo career. Baker Street, released in 1978, was still netting him £80,000 a year more than 30 years later.
Rafferty endured battles with the music industry – once taking three years to disentangle contracts – and a problem with alcohol. When he was a child his mother would drag him round the streets of Glasgow, rather than risk his suffering violence at the hands of his Irish-born father, who would often come home drunk.
Although sure of his own abilities, Rafferty was fearful of working with stars such as Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney. On occasion his drinking would lead him to smashing cases of expensive wine.
He divorced from his wife Carla – who he met at a dancehall when she was 15 and married five years later – in 1990. She said: "There was no hope. I would never have left him if there'd been a glimmer of a chance of him recovering."
Rafferty, having once owned a Kent farm and a home in Hampstead, moved to California to be near Martha, before moving to Ireland in 2008 and later Dorset.
In recent years, he was better known for alcohol-fuelled incidents, apparent disappearances and poor health than for his music. His last album, Another World, was released in 2000
