Dan Peek, a founding member of the popular 1970s band America and singer of high harmonies on hits that included A Horse With No Name and Ventura Highway, has died at the age of 60.

Dan's wife, Catherine, found him dead on Sunday in bed in his home in Missouri, south west of St Louis, his father Milton Peek said.

The cause of death was not known, and a post-mortem examination is planned. Dan Peek suffered from arthritis, but it is not known if that was a contributing factor.

Dan, whose father was in the US Air Force, had met the two other members of America - Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley - while attending college in London.

After signing a record contract, America were an almost instant sensation with songs featuring tight harmonies over catchy tunes.

All told, America had three platinum and three gold albums, along with eight Top 40 hits, from 1971 through to 1975.

"It was a joyous time for the three of us, full of excitement and laughter," Bunnell wrote on the band's website after learning of Peek's death. "We created lasting music together and experienced a life that we could never have imagined."

The group's first album in 1971 included the number one hit Horse With No Name.

Other hits followed - Tin Man, Sister Golden Hair, and Daisy Jane, among them. Dan played lead guitar on many of the songs, and wrote some of them, including the 1974 hit Lonely People.

"Dan & his music will live on in the great songs he shared with us all," Beckley wrote on the group's website.

Gerry Rafferty, who has died after a long illness

The singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, whose songs such as Stuck in the Middle with You, Baker Street and Get it Right Next Time soundtracked the 1970s, has died aged 63 after a long illness.

His family said he died at home peacefully with his daughter Martha this morning.

The Scot was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, played with Billy Connolly's folk outfit the Humblebums, and co-founded the soft-rock group Stealer's Wheel, before enjoying a successful solo career. Baker Street, released in 1978, was still netting him £80,000 a year more than 30 years later.

Rafferty endured battles with the music industry – once taking three years to disentangle contracts – and a problem with alcohol. When he was a child his mother would drag him round the streets of Glasgow, rather than risk his suffering violence at the hands of his Irish-born father, who would often come home drunk.

Although sure of his own abilities, Rafferty was fearful of working with stars such as Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney. On occasion his drinking would lead him to smashing cases of expensive wine.

He divorced from his wife Carla – who he met at a dancehall when she was 15 and married five years later – in 1990. She said: "There was no hope. I would never have left him if there'd been a glimmer of a chance of him recovering."

Rafferty, having once owned a Kent farm and a home in Hampstead, moved to California to be near Martha, before moving to Ireland in 2008 and later Dorset.

In recent years, he was better known for alcohol-fuelled incidents, apparent disappearances and poor health than for his music. His last album, Another World, was released in 2000

Ronnie James Dio Dies Aged 67
ok not a west coast singer but BOY what a STAR rip matey god bless!!
Heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio – who has performed with bands such as Dio, Heaven & Hell, Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath – sadly passed away on Sunday, after battling stomach cancer. And since his death, the tributes have been flooding in.

According to an article written by Kara Warner for mtv.com, tributes have been pouring in from Dio’s fans, bandmates and fellow musicians. People such as Slash, Queen’s Brian May and the Smashing Pumpkin’s Billy Corgan, have taken to the Internet to honor the late singer.

Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash took to his Twitter page, and wrote: “Ronnie died at 7:45 am. But his music will live for eternity.” Billy Corgan also took to Twitter, and said: R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio.” Billy went on to describe Dio as one of the nicest people he had ever met.

Queen’s Brian May wrote: “It’s a shock to hear that Ronnie has gone. Even though we had all known he was battling cancer for some time, he was such a wiry fighter, and of such an amazingly optimistic nature. I think I assumed he would go on forever.”

In a joint statement from Iron Maiden, the members described their friend Ronnie as an “incredibly gifted singer, and a wonderfully warm, intelligent and generous person. Our thoughts and prayers got to all Dio’s friends and family at this very sad time.
RIP ronnie

The Knack lead singer Doug Fieger dies

Doug Fieger, The Knack lead singer who co-wrote the new-wave band's biggest hit, "My Sharona," has died. He was 57.

Fieger died Sunday at his Woodland Hills, Calif., home after a battle with cancer.

"Our hearts are broken, we will miss you, Doug," the band wrote on its website.

A year after forming The Knack, Fieger co-wrote and sang lead vocals on the group's 1979 international smash "My Sharona." The riff-heavy tune, from the album Get the Knack, was inspired by Fieger's then-girlfriend, Sharona Alperin, and spent six weeks atop the Billboard pop chart.

"I had never met a girl like her — ever," he told The Associated Press in 1994. "She induced madness. She was a very powerful presence. She had an insouciance that wouldn't quit. She was very self-assured. ... She also had an overpowering scent, and it drove me crazy."

Fifteen years later, the song re-entered the Billboard chart and pop-culture consciousness when it was released as a single from Ben Stiller's film Reality Bites, which featured a gas station dance party scene to the song.

The song has been parodied by Weird Al Yankovic and was revealed to be on George W. Bush's presidential iPod.

Releasing albums through 2003, The Knack also produced the hits "Good Girls Don't" and "She's So Selfish," but never duplicated the success of "My Sharona."

A Detroit native, Fieger had been battling cancer since 2005. In 2006, he had two tumors removed from his brain.

Former Knack member Bruce Gary died of cancer in 2006, while Berton Averre and Prescott Niles continue to perform as The Knack.
