Robbie Buchanan

Robbie Buchanan has been a staple in the creation of the Westcoast sound. He's best known for his beautiful keyboard playing, arranging, and producing, but has been known to create some very cool soul/funk fusion grooves. Another "unsung" hero of CCM

Robbie Buchanan is a Canadian keyboardist, songwriter, arranger, and producer.

Buchanan began playing the piano at the age of 6. He acquired his first paying gig as a pianist at the age of 12 playing 6 nights a week in Dawson City, Yukon Territory. While still a teenager, Buchanan joined a band called Soul Unlimited, at the suggestion of friend Tom Baird. In the years that followed, Buchanan eventually moved to Los Angeles, California to write music with Carl Graves.

In 1978, Buchanan played a piano player in the Bette Midler film, The Rose. Buchanan would also go on to tour with Midler in support of the film. After a short period in 1980 playing with the Maxus band, Buchanan decided to turn his attention to being a full time session keyboardist. From that point on, his compositions and piano skills have earned him credits on albums by an impressive list of artists, including Bryan Adams, Christina Aguilera, Paul Anka, Philip Bailey, George Benson, Clint Black, Laura Branigan, Christopher Cross, Cher, Neil Diamond, Celine Dion, Bryan Duncan, Aretha Franklin, Amy Grant, Kim Hill, Roger Hodgson, Amy Holland, Whitney Houston, Enrique Iglesias, Julio Iglesias, James Ingram, The Isley Brothers, Jewel, Elton John, Phil Keaggy, Stacy Lattisaw, Crystal Lewis, Kenny Loggins, The Manhattan Transfer, Luis Miguel, Aaron Neville, Stevie Nicks, Kazumasa Oda, Dolly Parton, Sam Phillips, Diana Ross, Richie Sambora, Dusty Springfield, Ringo Starr, Steely Dan as well as on soundtracks for such films as Ghostbusters, Aladdin, and others.

First of all, Thanks for made this group to celebrate his grandness.
I know It's remarkable his great contribution of westcoast scene.
Love all his works such as his solo album name called "Original Demos"
and 2 of Urs Wieseanger album sessions, Sadao Watanabe - Front Seat
and much more too much to enumerate his nice works.
Nice songwriter too...some kind of ballads reminiscent of David Foster.

well it aint easy to tune those old uprights :-)) My self I don't tune them, I don't have enough pations...lol but I do all kinda reparations. Only acoustic instruments. I'm a cave woman too in this electronic jungle :-)) haha
I have a bunch of cool vintage instruments. A minimoog, a polymoog,a Wurlizer, a Rhodes, Roland U20, AND A MELOTRONE among others. This was my husbands instruments and after his death in 97 his brothers uses them. They are all keeboardists. But I still own them.

Cool--I just play them--tried tuning one once, but the middle "C" was detuned a half of a half-step btwn C and C#--I ended up goofing with it(it was an ancient old upright ready for the dump anyhow)and creating a 24 tone scale tack piano, special delivery from.."The Twilight Zone"(lol).I own an old Roland EP-70..old-school,but has a coupla rhodesy piano sounds that I can't seem to find in any samples on new synths & electr(on)ic pianos. Can you program a bit,or was it only acoustic uprights and grands that you tuned?(or miked, for that matter).I'm a bit of a caveman living in a technological jungle,if you get me.

p.s.Buchanan lives 3 mth's of the year somewhere here in Vancouver--just found out he's from here.Foster's from just across the Georgia Straight,in Victoria.Kinda cool how they're from basically the same neck of the woods, and are stylistically similar.Or maybe that's not that big a coincidence.(lol)

He is one of my favorite keyboard players too :-)
I'm a keyboard fan you know.....used to work as a piano technician before I moved to my equestrian farm :-)

Always felt that Buchanan has a certain flow,a fluidity in his playing that goes unmatched(with the possible exception of Foster,Omartian,Phillinganes, and MAYBE a couple of others that don't come to mind right now).Throw a ballad at this guy,and he'll squeeze more feel & passion out of it than maybe anybody else,IMO.
