Warren Zevon

Under-recognised in his all-too-short lifetime, Zevon wrote, recorded, and produced some of the wittiest, most intelligent music ever to come out of the west coast.

+1 on Human Touch. I have it loaded up, Jenny, lemme know if you want it and I can send it to you. It's ALMOST perfect, but it cries out for a Clarence Clemons sax solo. (I think Randy Jackson is on that album--he's on one that I have, and I don't have many of them.)

His overall best album IMHO was DOTEOT. Every cut a winner.

The Rising is also pretty good.

Jen-gotta say "Human touch" is one of the Boss' better tracks. His first record was ok. Overplayed here. Wz was the better poet. Just my ears. *shrug* T

no flinching from you, is there? if i knew more about S-steen, i could perhaps compose a better reply. who do we think - i'm asking everyone - is the superior musician, overall? maybe that's too harsh. . . i've never been a Boss fan. i like Cover Me and I'm On Fire and Point Blank. that's about it. my LPs ( i do have The River and Nebraska ) are scattered hither and yon; perhaps worth a listen. this has turned into such a ramble . . . "you really ARE him!" said an awed Zevon. where are those pix he took at the recording sessions for The Wind, I wonder . . .

gotta throw this one open.

Let Nothing Come Between You--Yeah, that one qualifies as "filler" in my book.

I never cared that much for Play It All Night Long until I heard the solo Flinch version. Now I love it, at least that one, and a couple of live band versions, such as those he cut with Odds in '92. Still don't care that much for the original on BLSIDS, though.

Speaking of WZ homages to The Boss, the guitar riff of Hostage-O is pretty much ripped right out of Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Bruce repaid the favor when he ripped the chords of Radio Nowhere from Splendid Isolation.

Turbulence is IMHO a second or third-rate ripoff of Poor Poor Pitiful Me.

LOL! ok, i feel precisely the same way about Play It All Night Long.

I like TC's jump into hyperspace, and a best-bit is the Russian in "Turbulence"

Had not noticed the Down in the Mall similarities to Cadillac Ranch, but you can bet I will go listen for them ASAP. That raucous version of CR that Z does live - a rarity in that he allows another band member to take a verse - absolutely rocks, and we know he admired Springsteen from way back, so it would be in keeping that some song would be a tribute or at least a nod, to The Boss.

filler: can't ever recall the title at this second, from the WZ album where all his mama can say is dee dee dee - reminds me of a scene from The Rutles where the inept newlywed Dirk is attempting to write a song for his new bride. ..if you haven't seen it, you should. my arrogant guess is that Z would have loved it - maybe even was familiar with it - the striking wit and dead-on satire are at Z's level.

I don't care for the tune, the tempo, or the lyrics. Other than that, it's fine.

Otherwise, TC is one of my very favorite WZ albums--I seem to like it more than most. Down in the Mall is one of my Top 5 Fave WZ songs--did you know that it seems to be a re-work of Springsteen's Cadillac Ranch?

Snake, you are right on target. don't worry about offending people, please. if we have disagreements, let's talk them out! what is it about TMTM that you specifically don't like?

Filler? That's a different question. Oh my yes. Every one of his albums has at least a couple songs I consider "filler." I hesitate to list them, because most of them seem to be other people's very favorites. (They Moved the Moon comes to mind.) On the other hand, I'm the only WZ fan I know whose very favorite is Roll with the Punches (narrowly edging out Boom Boom Mancini). If we're counting bootlegs, my favorite is Figurine.

Q: would anyone like to suggest some songs besides NITSY that they feel are filler? before i post an answer, i need to listen to some of his 90s albums start to finish to give an educated response.
