More about Arc of a Romance

In the spring of 2011, I was invited to participate in an emergency fundraising event in New York City. My friend Nadia Ackerman organized the event to assist Elisa and Nathan Bond, whose dramatic story had received national attention. The Bonds, parents of a young daughter, were diagnosed with cancer within a few days of each other. Their dramatic and courageous battle with the disease was inspirational to millions who read about them and watched them on NBC’s Today Show.

The concert was held in NYC at The Living Room. The musical concept was for each of the singers to perform songs chosen as favorites by the Bonds. I chose the classic “I Only Have Eyes For You." Drummer Doug Yowell was the music director. He did a remarkable job in organizing the house band featuring Oli Rockberger on keys, Jonathan Maron on bass, and Thad DeBrock on guitar.

From the moment we played the song at rehearsal, we all knew it was magic. That night the audience had a strong reaction to our performance. On my drive home, I decided to record the song as soon as it could be scheduled. Although there was no long-range plan, I knew that I wanted to recapture that moment. A few weeks later we were recording at Second Story Sound in New York’s Lower East Side.
.
The idea for the project was born there that night in the studio. Along with engineer and co-producer Julie Last, we planned to put together a recording of some of my favorite songs. The songs I chose were all inspirational to me, each one from a different decade and genre. From the start I wanted the title to be Arc of a Romance and accordingly the songs would represent the many phases of love.

The challenge in recording these songs was trying not to be overwhelmed by the original recordings, each one a masterpiece. I hope that these re-imagined versions reflect my respect and admiration for the writers and artists who continue to inspire me.

Along with the musicians listed above, the project features performances by Clifford Carter, David Spinoza, Jeff Pevar, Bill Harris, Leslie Smith, Donna Lewis, Manuel Quintana, Rick Chudacoff, Ira Coleman, Mike Demicco, and Kyle Esposito.

All tracks were recorded live in the studio with the exception of "We Let The Stars Go." Jeff Pevar recorded and performed all the instruments for the basic track at his studio in Oregon.
